Online Dating Safety in the USA: A Practical 2026 Playbook

Romance scams still cost Americans hundreds of millions a year. Here is how to date online without handing someone your banking app.

The risk is boring, and that is why it works

The Federal Trade Commission has warned for years that romance scams are among the most expensive frauds reported by U.S. adults. The scripts are not clever. They are patient. Someone is deployed overseas, someone is stuck at customs, someone has a sick child, someone wants you to “invest together” after three weeks of good-morning texts.

DateRank is a comparison site, not a police desk. We still put safety above every ranking on this domain because a 9.8 score means nothing if the person on the other side is running a boiler room. The habits below work on Match, Hinge, OurTime, and the free sites alike.

Keep money and dating in different rooms

Never send wire transfers, gift cards, crypto, or “temporary loans.” Never cash a check for someone you met online. If a match asks you to help with customs fees, military paperwork, or an investment dashboard, end the conversation. A real U.S. partner can wait until you have met.

Do not give out your Social Security number, routing number, or copies of your driver’s license because a “verification team” asked in a private chat. Dating companies do not collect those through WhatsApp.

Video call before you travel

A live video call is the cheapest background check you will ever run. Catfish accounts stall, freeze, or “have a broken camera.” If they will not show their face on a call, they do not get a plane ticket, a hotel, or your home address.

For the first in-person date, pick a public place in a U.S. city you already know: a busy coffee shop, a museum lobby, a well-lit restaurant. Tell a friend where you are going. Arrange your own ride. Do not let a new match pick you up from your front door.

Watch the off-platform rush

Scammers move you to text, Telegram, or WhatsApp because it is harder for the dating site to detect the fraud pattern. Moving off-app is normal after you have matched and talked. Moving off-app in the first five messages, especially toward a money story, is a red flag.

Use the in-app report button. It is not dramatic. It is how platforms remove accounts that will target the next person in your ZIP code. If you lost money, report to the FTC at ReportFraud.ftc.gov and consider a local police report for the paper trail.

U.S.-specific extras that actually help

Reverse-image search profile photos. Look up unusual phone numbers. Be skeptical of profiles that claim to live in your city but only talk in vague terms about neighborhoods. Americans name streets, teams, grocery stores, and weather. Fantasy profiles talk about destiny.

If you are over 50, assume you are a target. That is not an insult. It is crime data. OurTime and Match are still worth using — just slower, with video, and with a friend who knows you are dating.

Next step

If you already know what you want, skip back to the USA rankings and pick a site that matches the job.
